Pirin has over 180 lakes, formed in cirques, surrounded by sharp peaks and moraines. But some of them are more than geography – they are legend.

Tevno Lake - The Dark Height of Pirin
Tevno Lake lies at an altitude of 2521 m, among the highest large lakes in Bulgaria. It is located in a harsh alpine cirque between the peaks Momin Dvor and Valyavishki Chukar.
Its name comes from „dark,“ but it's not poetic embellishment, it's a visual fact. The water is often almost black, deep and still, absorbing light rather than reflecting it.
On its shore stands the „Tevno Lake“ shelter, a place that for many hikers is the boundary between the familiar and the high solitude of Pirin.
Bunderishki Lakes – a glacial system of light
The Bunderishki Lakes are one of the largest and most well-defined glacial lake groups in the mountain, imagine 16 bodies of water situated in a granite cirque.
Here, nature is softer, almost manicured. Water flows in stages between lakes, creating a sense of movement in an otherwise still landscape.
Among them stand out Long Lake - wide and calm at 2310 m, and Murata Lake, located on a terrace with an almost perfect reflection of the peaks around it.

Vasilashki and Todorini Lakes – when geography becomes legend
The Vasilashki Lakes are located between the peaks of Todorina, Vasilashki Chukar, and Tipitsite – a complex system of cirques and sub-cirques, arranged amphitheatrically in northern Pirin.
Highest in this world stand the two Todori's Lakes, known as „Todori's Eyes.“ Viewed from above, they truly resemble two frozen tears in the rock.
And this is where the Pirin legend is born – about Todorka and Vasil. Love, prohibition, loss. In its various versions, she either throws herself from the summit or turns into tears, and Vasil forever searches for her. Thus, the lakes remain as traces of human emotion, sealed in glacial form.

Vlahini Lakes: The „Depth“ of Pirin
Vlahini Lakes are more remote and less visited, hidden among ridges and steep slopes. This is one of the most pristine lake systems in the mountain.
Big Vlahino Lake is among the most impressive – with a depth of over 13 meters and an area of over 60 decares. Around it, the other lakes form a natural cascade of water, stone, and frozen stillness.
Popovo Lake: The „Heart“ of the High Pirin
Popovo Lake is the largest lake in the mountain and one of the most impressive in Bulgaria.
It is located in a huge cirque, surrounded by the peaks Sivria, Dzhanol and Dzhangal. With an area of over 120 decares and a depth of almost 30 meters, it is the true water center of northern Pirin.
Here begins the stream, which becomes a river and leaves the high mountains to meander downhill.
Godless - The Accessible Height
Bezbozhko Lake and the hut above it are among the most accessible high-altitude spots in Pirin, thanks to the lift from Dobrinishte.
And despite the convenience for mass tourism, the place remains truly alpine – with snowdrifts until late spring and a short, bright summer, during which the mountain literally changes its colors in a matter of days.

The lakes of Pirin are not just natural sites. They are a trace of ice, time, and movement that stopped thousands of years ago.
From the dark Tevno Lake to the wide Popovo Lake, aren't they the same story, told at different altitudes: of water that remembers ice, and of stone that guards ancient secrets through millennia?!
