Through the lens of Viktor Demidov, among Bulgaria's most beautiful waterfalls
Summer is the season when we all seek coolness. And it is often found not by the sea, but in the mountains – where the sound of falling water drowns out everything else.
With this post, the section „Photo essays“ on TEA – „Experience. Adventure. Journey“ It marks the beginning of a photographic journey through Bulgaria. In three consecutive parts, we will take you to some of the most beautiful Bulgarian waterfalls through impressive photos, short videos, and useful information about each location. You will learn where they are located, when they are most full, and why they are worth visiting.
Behind the lens is one of our authors, Viktor Demidov. He doesn't like to talk much about himself. When he has free time, he grabs his camera, tripod, and backpack, and heads to the mountains. Whether steep trails, early mornings, or summer heat await him, he knows that the most beautiful shots are found where nature has remained authentic.
The start of the series was not chosen randomly.
We begin with Varovitz Waterfall near Etropole, also known as the Lilac Waterfall: with the photos that brought Viktor Demidov international recognition.
His photograph was honored at the prestigious international 35AWARDS competition: Waterfalls 2021, where, among 2,602 photographers from 111 countries who submitted 6,545 photographs, Victor’s shot ranks among the top 2% in the world.
For us, this distinction is recognition not only of the author's talent but also of the beauty of Bulgarian nature, captured through his lens.

Varoviteț Waterfall (Lilac Waterfall) - The Beginning of a Photographic Journey
The Varovets waterfall is located less than three kilometers from the town of Etropole, which is why it is often called Etropole Waterfall. is only a few minutes' walk away Etropole Monastery „Holy Trinity“ – one of the most significant spiritual centers in the region.
Until the 1970s, a water wheel operated at the end of the stone trough, which powered a generator for electricity and supplied power to the monastery – a curious fact from the history of this place.
Although he is about 15 meters, Varovitec is considered by many tourists, photographers, and travelers to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bulgaria. The reason is not its height, but its shape. The water descends over rounded rocks, divides into numerous cascades, winds between bright green mosses, and creates a different picture each season.
The forest path to the waterfall is pleasant and easy. Wooden railings allow visitors to get very close to the water and calmly enjoy the cascades.
It is located about 750 meters above sea level Amidst dense deciduous forests on the southern slopes of Stara Planina. Thanks to its constant water flow, Varovets is almost always full, and it is most impressive in spring and early summer.
