Switzerland from the Alps: Matterhorn, Jungfraujoch, Titlis and Basel in Katia Via's new adventure

Episode two

If you have forgotten the beginning of the series, you can recall it here: Switzerland.

In the morning I take a final look at the weather forecast in Zermatt and we decide: today we are going to see Matterhorn.

And if he wishes to see us.

We travel for a few hours and, getting off in Zermatt, all passengers begin to admire the view of the peak, which looks so close. Only a single cloud passes through the middle, but that cannot ruin the pleasure.

We take the cog railway to the peak and along the way we not only enjoy the view of the Toblerone emblem, but we also see running marmots.
One very hurried, almost flying, and a family of three. We decide that we will walk down to this place later, in hopes of seeing these wonderful animals in slow motion.

We are reaching the last stop, Gornergrat (3089 m). The view of the neighboring snow-capped peaks is wonderful, even though there are quite a few clouds.

The Matterhorn begins to hide, and we set off on foot downwards to look for not only marmots, but also the local sheep. We find a flock and talk to the shepherdess, who tells funny stories.
Little by little, the peak hides behind thick clouds and reveals itself slightly just as we reach a bench for a photo stop, with a small church next to it.

We stop by the nearby shop, which is next to one of the railway stops, to get a Toblerone, and the moment we walk out of the shop, we start screaming.

Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps

The Matterhorn, imposing and majestic, revealed itself before us without a single cloud.

Were we in the store for hours?!?!

We run back to the bench, which for some reason nobody finds attractive, we sit down and take pictures like crazy with and without the chocolate one Toblerone.

And it is hard to tear ourselves away from here, but the thought of the marmots helps us get moving.
We head down a steep path that winter is clearly used for as a slope. The little animals, however, do not wish to see us, apparently having important business, and so we continue to the next stop of the coaster.
Along the way, however, a new surprise awaits us. In front of the small hotel before the bus stop, musicians have gathered, playing the alphorn, one of the most ancient musical instruments. The pleasure is incomparable. We listen to them as we walk towards them, and then we take some final photos of the Matterhorn as a backdrop to the musicians.

The day is ending wonderfully.

Jungfraujoch, „Top of Europe“

The next day remains for the visit to Jungfraujoch, popularly known as the „Top of Europe“ because it is home to the highest railway station on our continent, to 3454 m.

The forecast is promising. We are passing by again beautiful Wengen and we get off at Kleine Scheidegg to transfer to the cogwheel railway that will take us to the coveted views.

No way Kleine Scheidegg It doesn't provide stunning views, but there are too many clouds. At the next stop, almost nothing is visible because of the fog, but at the „Sea of Ice“ the sun is shining and we take wonderful pictures.
The last stop did not disappoint us either. Not a single cloud is visible in the sky, the mountains are crystal clear, we are enjoying the snow and the beauties of nature. The peaks are smiling at us and we at them. Beauty is all around us.

Following these beauties, we head to The Ice Palace, where we walk through the icy corridors 20 meters below the surface of the glacier.
It is hard to leave the top of Europe, especially when the weather is so gracious.
This is followed by another descent to Kleine Scheidegg, but from there this time we head towards Grindelwald, while all the time on the right we observe The North Face, or the north face of Mount Eiger, where countless climbers have lost their lives, according to a travelogue we read.

The mountain is harsh, steep, and awe-inspiring to anyone who looks at it. Hours of travel back to Zurich, and along the way we see an extremely plump chicken through the window. We are convinced this is the fattest chicken in the world. 😊

Titlis and the highest suspension bridge in Europe

We decided to dedicate the last day to the highest suspension bridge in Europe in Mount Titlis, which is located at an altitude of about 3041 m and is reached by three successive cable cars, the last of which rotates 360 degrees.

I am a bit disappointed with the bridge itself, because somehow it doesn't feel like it's that high, but then again, the views all along the way and at the top are like something out of a postcard.

We meet a man who had been there the previous day and shares that nothing could be seen at more than a meter away, which is why he came again today, even though his family accused him of madness, but he didn't regret it for even a second.

Last stop: Basel

For the afternoon, we are hesitating between yet another mountain tour in search of marmots and a visit to Basel. We choose the city walk this time and do not regret it.

Basel is very beautiful, and the town hall building is the most impressive building we have seen in Switzerland.

And so we leave, quite pleased, Switzerland, whose code CH I always thought came from the word for chocolate, rather than the trivial Swiss Confederation.

Beauty is everywhere in this country.

Hopefully we will have the opportunity to come back another day and enjoy more postcard-like views and the melt-in-your-mouth heavenly chocolate.

Edge.
